The first thing people
associate Yoga is with standing on one's head. This is absolutely not true.
To clear up a lot of accumulated misconceptions about Yoga, let's start with What Yoga is
not.
Yoga is not standing on one's
head, standing on one leg for hours, burying oneself underground or fasting for
weeks. It is not wearing suffron robes, abandoning ones family, flying in the air,
or living the life of a recluse. It is not sitting in incensefilled rooms chanting
mantras nor is it something secret that requires the student to be initiated into it.
Put simply, Yoga is the
science of man. It is about perfect health - body, mind and soul.
There are many, many schools
of Yoga, each with its own interpretation. Just as with most religions, there is the
source and then tehre are teh various offshoots that result from interpretations,
personally clashes and differences of opinions.
It is beyond the scope and
purpose of this manual to talk about the various schools of Yoga. What we will tell
you, briefly, is the EIGHT-FOLD PATH as enuciated by Patanjali which forms the basis of
most schools of thought in Yoga.
