FROM THE DESK OF PROF. MOIZ HUSSAIN Ph.D.

APRIL 2000

The Mind needs to be quiet in order to be creative and innovative. But the problem is that all efforts to silence the mind results in the mind becoming more active and dominant.

The other term widely used is "Controlling the mind" this is he western concept which is opposite to quieting the mind. Control leads to strengthening of the negative aspect of one’s personality while silence helps one develop an objective perspective towards life and situations.

What ever we focus on determines what we create : our reality, so if the mind is not silent but a whirlwind of anxiety and unrest, we create a world of anxiety, unrest and discomfort. But as we learn to let go and watch out thoughts, we notice how our anxieties and fears begin to slowly fade away and we become centered and focused.

One easy way to experience this most profound state of Silence is to take out time and with closed eyes observe our thoughts- One after another. Their connection and how each though invokes certain sensations and feelings. How some thoughts make us feel uncomfortable and some very placid and safe. One who is engaged in this practice on a regular basis comes to realize that

"nothing is permanent except CHANGE".

Thoughts change and if we learn not to identify ourselves with out thoughts we can learn to be free. When we have think anxious, the ability not to feel anxious is within us. After all its a Thought. I am not the thought. I choose to think what I want.
